As runners age, their peak cardiovascular and muscle capabilities naturally decline. Consequently, comparing race times directly across different generations is often misleading.

Age-Grading solves this problem by using statistical handicaps to evaluate running performance. Developed by the World Masters Athletics (WMA) statistics panel, this system compares your race time against the theoretical world-record performance for an athlete of your exact age and gender at that distance.

By entering your details in the calculator above, you can find your Age-Graded Score (Percentage), your Age-Graded Equivalent Time (what your time would be if you were in the 20–35 prime age group), and your corresponding master runner performance category.

Understanding Your Age-Grading Score (%)
#

WMA defines six standard categories for age-graded percentages, letting you know where your performance stands relative to the absolute world standards for your age group:

  • ≥ 90% (World Class): Represents a performance near or at the absolute world-record level.
  • 80% – 89.9% (National Class): An exceptional performance capable of competing at the national championship level.
  • 70% – 79.9% (Regional Class): A very strong performance competitive at the provincial or regional level.
  • 60% – 69.9% (Local Class): A solid performance competitive at the local club or community race level.
  • 50% – 59.9% (Active Runner): A healthy, fit runner executing regular structured training.
  • < 50% (Recreational Runner): An active fitness runner enjoying recreational running and personal progress.

Because these percentages normalize age and gender, a 60-year-old running a 5K in 21:00 (scoring 76.0%) is mathematically running a higher-quality race than a 25-year-old running a 5K in 18:00 (scoring 72.1%)!

Formula and Calculation Principles
#

The age-graded calculations involve three main variables:

  1. Open Class (OC) Standard: The world-record standard for the distance in the prime age group (ages 20–35).
  2. Age Standard: The world-record standard for your specific age and gender at that distance.
  3. Age Factor: The ratio between the Open Standard and the Age Standard for your specific age and gender:
    • Age Factor = Open Standard / Age Standard

Using these WMA parameters, the calculator computes:

  • Age-Graded Score:
    • Age-Graded Score % = (Age Standard / Your Time) * 100
  • Age-Graded Equivalent Time:
    • Equivalent Time = Your Time * Age Factor = Your Time * (Open Standard / Age Standard)

Frequently Asked Questions
#

What is a WMA age grading calculator for runners?
#

A WMA age grading calculator compares your race time to the world record for your exact age and gender at that distance. It gives you an Age-Graded Percentage Score (e.g. 70% Regional Class) and an Equivalent Open-Class Finish Time as if you ran it at physical prime.

What is a good age-graded running score?
#

A score of 60% to 69% represents a solid local race level. Scoring 70% to 79% is considered regional class, 80% to 89% is national class, and 90%+ is world class.

Why do age-grading factors change over time?
#

World Masters Athletics (WMA) periodically updates the age-grading tables when new world records are established in older age categories, ensuring the baseline reflects current master achievements.

What is age-graded equivalent time?
#

Age-graded equivalent time is an estimate of what your race time would have been if you ran the exact same relative performance during your prime physical age (ages 20–35).
