VDOT vs Garmin VO2 Max: Why Your Watch Estimate Might Be Wrong

Many runners check their Garmin or Apple Watch after a hard workout and wonder: Why does my watch say my VO2 Max is 52, but my VDOT calculator gives me a 46? Which number should I actually use to set my training paces?

GPS smartwatches estimate your VO2 Max using proprietary algorithms (often licensed from Firstbeat). They analyze the relationship between your GPS pace and your heart rate (HR) during submaximal running.

  • How it works: If you run at 5:00/km (8:00/mile) with a low heart rate, the algorithm assumes you have high aerobic capacity.
  • The flaw: Optical wrist heart rate sensors frequently experience “cadence lock” or HR drift due to heat, fatigue, or dehydration. If your heart rate spikes due to 30°C (86°F) weather, your watch assumes your aerobic capacity has dropped overnight.

2. Jack Daniels’ VDOT (Effective VO2 Max from Race Results)

VDOT was developed by exercise physiologist Jack Daniels, PhD. Rather than relying on heart rate sensors, VDOT measures your pseudo-VO2 Max based on actual race performances.

  • How it works: VDOT factors in both your physiological oxygen consumption AND your running economy (biomechanical efficiency, stride mechanics, and mental toughness).
  • Why it is more reliable: A runner with a laboratory VO2 Max of 55 who has poor running economy might race equally with a runner whose lab VO2 Max is 50 but who runs with fluid, economical mechanics. VDOT rewards actual race output rather than theoretical heart-rate ratios.

Rule of Thumb: Always use VDOT to set your daily training paces.

If you use a Garmin VO2 Max estimate that is falsely elevated by 4–5 points to set your Threshold (T) or Interval (I) paces, you will end up training at intensity zones far beyond your current physiological capabilities. This forces your body into the unproductive “grey zones”, increasing injury risk and chronic fatigue.
