Race week is a strange mental space for endurance runners.
After months of stacking weekly mileage, waking up early for long runs, and watching the aerobic base quietly build, the final seven days arrive—and suddenly, you don’t know what to do with yourself.
I found myself trapped between two competing doubts this week ahead of an upcoming autumn half marathon:
- “Am I running too much and wearing myself out right before the gun goes off?”
- “Am I resting too much and going to make my legs feel like heavy wooden blocks on race morning?”
If you run too far or too fast on Tuesday, you deplete muscle glycogen that takes 48 hours to replace. But if you take four straight days completely off, your nervous system powers down, your tendons lose their spring-like elastic tension, and race morning feels sluggish.
Turning the countdown into a tool#
I wanted a clear, visual blueprint: not a generic static PDF with rigid numbers, but a responsive schedule that respects a runner’s actual weekly baseline.
If someone runs 35 kilometres a week, their taper needs to look very different from someone running 75 kilometres. If their race is Saturday instead of Sunday, or if their gun time is 7:00 AM instead of 8:30 AM, everything from the tune-up run to the race-morning oatmeal shifts.
So we built the Race Week Taper & Countdown Planner.
It takes your race distance, your target finish pace, your baseline weekly volume, and your race morning start time, and generates a personalized race week protocol:
- The 7-Day Schedule: Automatically reduces volume by roughly 50% while placing a 2km race-pace tune-up and short neuromuscular strides on the right days. The strides preserve leg turnover without taxing muscle fibers.
- The Minute-by-Minute Morning Timeline: Counts backward from gun time (when to eat, when to pin the bib, when to drop bags, and when to start the 5-minute activation jog).
- Fueling & Clean Carbs: Reminders for low-fiber carb loading and on-course gel timing.
- One-Click Calendar Export: Generates a standard
.icsfile to load workouts and countdown alarms directly into Apple Calendar.
Resting without second-guessing#
In endurance sports, the hardest discipline during race week is often holding back. When the weather turns crisp and your legs feel springy, the instinct is to test your fitness early.
Having a structured countdown on paper—or on your phone—takes the emotion out of the final week. You don’t have to debate whether running 5 kilometres today is a mistake. You just do the prescribed shakeout, stretch, and let the rest happen.
The fitness is already in the bank. Race week is just about making sure you arrive at the starting line rested, fueled, and ready to let it out.
